Whitby Goth Weekend (WGW)
Whitby is a seaside town, in the county of North Yorkshire, England and the host to the Whitby Goth Weekend (WGW) a popular event since 1993. It has grown into a biannual celebration of all manner of characters, genre’s, sub genres music and art. The main events are held at the Whitby Spa Pavilion but during the weekend many of the local hotels and pubs put on additional live music acts. There is also the popular Bizarre Bazaar Goth Market selling all things Gothic from jewelry and clothing to art and music. Although it’s called a Goth Festival, it’s a favorite 3 day weekend of all the Punk Genre’s. Held twice a year, it attracts people far and wide to the occasion, often traveling great distances and from other countries for the spectacle. Steampunks, Diesel punks, Pirates, and Elves, Emos, Bikers, and Metallers (for more sub genre’s see Steampunk news) dress in lavish costumes, displaying their personal flare and style during the weekend festivities.
Goths and non-Goths alike can be seen parading around the town visiting booths and the many dance venues in costumes often made by hand. It’s a friendly atmosphere to be enjoyed by all.
